A Business Journey to Shanghai: Cultural Insights and Professional Experiences
Recently, a group of us from Hand Global Solutions Indonesia embarked on a
two-month business trip to Shanghai as part of our NL Project. This journey
was not only a professional endeavor but also an opportunity to experience
firsthand the cultural differences between Indonesia and China. From work
styles and lifestyle habits to local cuisine and workplace amenities, our time
in Shanghai was filled with eye-opening experiences. One of the most memorable
aspects of our trip was the kindness and hospitality of our Chinese
colleagues, who went out of their way to make us feel welcome and help us
immerse ourselves in their culture. Here are some key observations from our
stay.

** 1\. The Warm Welcome from Chinese Colleagues **
From the moment we arrived, our Chinese colleagues—Li Xiongfei (李雄飞), Wang
Yujie (王宇杰), Xiao Mengru (肖梦如), and Cai Xufeng (蔡旭峰)—were incredibly kind and
welcoming. They took the time to show us around the city, introduce us to
local customs, and ensure we felt at home. Whether it was recommending the
best restaurants, teaching us basic Mandarin phrases, or organizing cultural
outings, their generosity left a lasting impression on us.

** 2\. The Vibrant Energy of Shanghai **
As soon as we landed in Shanghai, the city's energy was palpable. The modern
skyline, with its towering skyscrapers reaching towards the clouds, was a
sight to behold. The busy streets were filled with a constant stream of
people, cars, and bicycles, all moving in a harmonious yet bustling rhythm.
The contrast between the historic buildings on one side of the Huangpu River
and the ultra-modern architecture on the other was a testament to the city's
rapid development.

** 3\. Contrasting Lifestyles: Indonesia vs. China **
One of the most striking differences we noticed was the contrast in lifestyle
and work culture. In Indonesia, life tends to be more relaxed and community-
focused. People prioritize personal relationships and family time, with a
strong emphasis on enjoying life outside of work.

Shanghai, in contrast, operates at a much faster pace. The Chinese work ethic
is intense, with employees often working long hours and striving for
excellence. Meetings were quick, efficient, and focused on results. While this
efficiency was impressive, it also highlighted the more flexible and
relationship-driven approach to work that we were accustomed to in Indonesia.

** 4\. Work-Life Balance: A Focus on Health and Fitness **
Despite the demanding work culture, we were pleasantly surprised by the
emphasis on work-life balance, particularly in health and fitness. Our Chinese
colleagues made it a point to engage in regular physical activities, such as
playing badminton every Wednesday. This commitment to staying active was
refreshing and inspiring, as it encouraged us to incorporate similar habits
into our own routines.
In Indonesia, while there is growing awareness of the importance of health, it
is not as deeply ingrained in work culture. Seeing how the Chinese integrate
physical activity into their schedules was a valuable lesson.

** 5\. The Challenge of Internet Blockage **
One of the more challenging aspects of our stay in China was the internet
restrictions. Platforms like Google, WhatsApp, and YouTube are inaccessible
without a VPN. This was a significant adjustment, as these platforms are
integral to daily life and work in Indonesia. However, it also provided an
opportunity to explore local alternatives like WeChat and Baidu, underscoring
the importance of adaptability when working in a foreign country.
在中国期间，比较有挑战性的一个方面就是互联网的限制。如果没有VPN，我们无法使用像Google、WhatsApp和YouTube这样的平台。对我们来说，这是一个不小的改变。因为这些平台在印尼的日常生活和工作中占据了重要地位。不过，这也让我们有机会去体验和探索像微信、百度这样的本地替代方案，同时也让我们更加体会到在异国工作中灵活适应的重要性。
** 6\. Comfortable Living: Workplace Amenities in China **
Another notable difference was the living arrangements provided by the company
in Shanghai. Many companies offer comprehensive amenities such as on-site
dorms, gyms, and canteens. These facilities made daily life more convenient
and allowed employees to focus on their work without worrying about commuting
or meal preparation.
In Indonesia, such amenities are less common, and employees often have to
manage their own living arrangements. The availability of these facilities in
China enhanced our quality of life and fostered a sense of community among
colleagues.

** 7\. Experiencing Winter for the First Time **
One of the most shocking and exciting experiences during our trip was
encountering winter for the first time. Coming from Indonesia, where the
climate is consistently warm, the cold temperatures in Shanghai were a
completely new experience for us. The first time we stepped outside into the
chilly air, we were both thrilled and unprepared. We quickly learned the
importance of layering clothing, wearing gloves, and drinking hot tea to stay
warm.

The sight of our breath turning into mist and feeling the icy wind on our
faces was surreal. Our colleagues were amused by our fascination with the cold
and kindly guided us on how to handle winter weather. Experiencing winter
firsthand added a unique dimension to our trip, making it even more memorable.
