Predictive Analysis: This is the hardest one to convey. PA might better be

understood by saying what it does not do. Its not creating a forecast. Its not

looking at your trend in A/R and predicting an A/R value for next month and

addingupthosevaluestotell youwhatavaluewillbenextmonth. Instead, its

lookingforrelationshipsbetweenyourKPIsandeverythingelseinthecube,over

time. So lets say your KPI is customer satisfaction, the software might notice

theresacorrelationwithonemonthlagbetweenajumpinA/Randadeclinein

customer satisfaction. Happy customerspay their bills in a traditional setting,

customersatisfactionisnotaparentofA/R,sothatwouldnevershouldup,but

it can find. And it makes a prediction based on that. Its only going to try and

correlatethethingsyouvedesignatedasKPIs. Itsnotexact.

Linear Regression

Linear regression attemptstomodel the relationshipbetweentwovariablesby

fitting a linear equation to observed data. One variable is considered to be an

explanatory variable, and the other is considered to be a dependent variable.

For example, amodelermight wanttorelatetheweightsofindividualstotheir

heightsusingalinearregressionmodel. Beforeattemptingtofitalinearmodel

to observed data, a modeler should first determine whether or not there is a

relationshipbetweenthevariablesofinterest. Thisdoesnotnecessarilyimplythat

onevariablecausestheother(forexample,higherSATscoresdonotcausehigher

collegegrades), but that there issome significant association between the two

variables. Ascatterplot can beahelpfultool indeterminingthestrengthofthe

relationshipbetweentwovariables. Ifthereappearstobenoassociationbetween

theproposedexplanatoryanddependent variables(i.e., thescatterplotdoesnot

indicate any increasing or decreasing trends), then fitting a linear regression

modeltothedataprobablywillnotprovideausefulmodel. Avaluablenumerical

measure of association between two variables is the correlation coefficient,

which isa valuebetween -1 and 1 indicating thestrength of theassociation of

the observed data for the two variables.

AlinearregressionlinehasanequationoftheformY=a+bX,whereXisthe

explanatoryvariableandYisthedependentvariable. Theslopeofthelineisb,

and aistheintercept (the value ofy whenx =0).
